Celebrating Everyday Triumphs Through Heritage-Inspired Design
Homegrown Nigerian fashion brand, THIS IS US, proudly announces the launch of its Spring/Summer 2025 collection, titled “Local Champion.” This collection pays homage to the indomitable spirit of everyday individuals, drawing inspiration from traditional Nigerian workwear and the resilience found in daily life.
Building upon its acclaimed Uniform Wear line, “Local Champion” introduces a contemporary reinterpretation of the Danshiki—a garment steeped in cultural significance within Black history. This modern iteration features a hand-embroidered checkerboard neckline and a loose, boxy silhouette that echoes the regal drape of the traditional Agbada. Crafted from the brand’s signature indigo-dyed Funtua cotton, each piece is hand-dyed by artisans at the historic Kofar Mata dye pits in Kano, Nigeria, underscoring the brand’s commitment to preserving indigenous craftsmanship.
Inspired by the visual language of sports jerseys, the Danshiki features bold, customizable patches that echo 90s-era logos, evoking a sense of nostalgia and playful pride. The neckline, finished in a distinctive green and white checkerboard pattern, adds a striking contrast that grounds the piece in a retro-athletic aesthetic. Patch designs include a “Local Champion” medallion, a Fanta-inspired Funtua patch, a fist pump motif, and a Chupa Chups–inspired badge reading “In my village dem dey hail me.” These vibrant elements add a sense of personal storytelling and communal recognition to the garment. The Danshiki is available in both a tee and crop version, offering versatility while preserving its cultural and stylistic integrity.
The collection also features summer essentials such as kaftan dresses, hand-woven (aso-oke) trousers, loose-fitting indigo print sets, camp-collared shirts, and new colorways of the brand’s best sellers including the double-breasted suit, baggy trouser, and OzzyBoomBoom dress. Prints within the collection harmonize summer-inspired graphic patterns, including palms, checkerboards, fans, monochrome colour blocking and a classic stripe shibori design.
Since its inception, THIS IS US has championed the use of local materials and production methods, notably promoting the use of Nigerian-grown Funtua cotton. The “Local Champion” collection serves as a timely reminder of the importance of celebrating personal achievements and the value of community recognition.
The collection will be available to shop at www.thisisusworld.com on the 19th of June 2024.
