Nigerian singer-songwriter Uchechi Emelonye is set to premiere new visuals for her single, Underwater.

Released in 2022, Underwater uses metaphorical language to tell the story of a woman overcoming struggles in her life. The lyrics depict her rising above challenges despite confronting waves and turbulence. Emelonye sings with smooth, mellow vocals over an infectious Afro-fusion musical arrangement. The song resonated widely, even earning Emelonye the distinction of BBC Music’s Introducing Record of the Year 2022 in Lancashire, England. Emelonye’s expressive singing and compelling fusion sound has brought her recognition through Underwater, sealing her status as a rising star in the African music industry.

From her debut single, Little Blackbird (2020), to With You (2021), Sunrise to Sundown (2022), and her latest 2023 single, Baby You, Emelonye has built her music catalog over the years. Along with her musical output, Emelonye puts effort into crafting visually striking music videos to accompany each track, and Underwater is no different. Her talent for making compelling and aesthetically pleasing visuals match her songs seems to be another one of the young artist’s strong suits. The new video for Underwater continues Emelonye’s pattern of combining picturesque cinematography and imagery to showcase her music.

Produced by Atta Otigba, Underwater was shot in the United Kingdom by Fincotown Productions. The music video encapsulates the song’s essence through striking underwater scenes and skillful filmography.
