Nigerian music has grown and evolved over the years with some songs lasting the test of time while others are already forgotten. Focusing on the evergreen songs, there are certain songs that invoke a sense of nostalgia and excitement whenever they are played. From Lori Le to Ijoya, here are five songs that still slap hard at any event they pop up!
Lori Le by X Project
This song is a major blast from the past that is still a crowd pleaser! Sierra Naija fusion group Xtreme Project aka X-Project blessed the music scene with Lori Le in 2007. It quickly became a number 1 go-to party track that had people shouting and grooving already at the catchy sound of its intro. This particular track made X-Project extremely popular both at home and abroad and featured a tongue-twisting verse from Konga.
Olufunmi by Styl Plus
Styl Plus! The name of the talented group alone is enough to put a huge smile on your face. In 2006, they dropped the hit song, Olufunmi off the stellar Olufunmi/Runaway/Call My Name. Following its release, Olufunmi quickly one of the most requested love songs on major Nigerian R&B radio stations. This Styl Plus song, in particular, remains an evergreen song that still has people singing along enthusiastically when it pops up at weddings and other events.
Raise Da Roof by Jazzman Olofin ft. Adewale Ayuba
It is a crime to talk about classic Nigerian songs without mentioning Raise Da Roof. With the love this song still has, it is almost difficult to believe that the song’s release date goes as far back as 2004! This Jazzman Olofin and Adewale Ayuba super collaboration wasted no time in becoming a national anthem after it was released. With its catchy and most notable lyrics ‘Bubble ko ma bubble’ the song has retained its ability to get people screaming in excitement whenever it comes up at events.
Ijoya by Weird MC
In 2006, Weird MC, a Nigerian rapper, songwriter, and producer, released Ijoya off her second album titled After Da Storm. Produced by Don Jazzy and JJC, this song was a huge hit that bagged her an AMEN award for Most Pop Song. The hit song was accompanied by an animated music video, one of the few at the time which got her a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect. Several years later since its debut, it is practically impossible not to sing along and vibe to this track whenever you hear it.
Ijo Fuji by Adewale Ayuba
This hit track by Nigerian Fuji musician, Adewale Ayuba, commonly known as Mr Johnson, was a total banger in 2007 when it was released. Ijo Fuji was played at practically every bubbling event back then. It is safe to say that your event was not a party if this song was not played. Fast forward to 2022 and it is still not a party without this evergreen song.
