New movies are constantly being released by movie industries around the world and movie lovers have been put on the edges of their seats. Nollywood has also done a good job so far of sparking up the needed amount of anticipation in viewers this year with already released movies and rumours of movies to come. Nigeria’s film industry has kept us anticipating and entertained from January through February this year, so it’s no surprise we are already eager to see what they have in store for viewers throughout the course of the year. Here are 5 upcoming Nollywood movies you should be on the look out for.
1. A Simple Lie
This Biodun Stepehen project is scheduled to be released in cinemas on March 25th, 2022. The official trailer of A Simple Lie has recently been unveiled by Biodun Stephen’s Shutterspeed projects and David Wade production. The storyline of the romantic comedy revolves around a lie dished out in a spontaneous moment which eventually sets off a series of disastrous events. The film’s featured cast include Bisola Aiyeola, Bolaji Ogunmola, Kachi Nnochiri, Emmanuel Ikubese and Kie Kie Adeaga. A Simple Life is the most recent collaboration from Biodun Stephen and David Wade, coming after the movie Breaded Life. The aforementioned movie had a rather impressive theatrical run last year and we can safely say we expect the same from A Simple Lie.
2. The Last Man Standing
The Last Man Standing is a new biopic by Seun Oloketuyi and is set to be released this year. This movie is centred around Tinubu and follows his story right from when he emerged governor of Lagos State, through the challenges he faced in power, his academic controversies, local government issues, up to when Buhari came into power as the President. With Nollywood star Lateef Adedimeji in the lead role, The Last Man Standing is one movie we are all quite curious to watch.
3. Passport
Passport is a forthcoming Nollwood movie directed by Dimeji Ajibola, scheduled for release this year. This movie tells the story of Oscar and Funke, two people on the opposite sides of life who clash and have to work together to achieve an important goal. Passport displays how a rich kid and a ghetto boy find themselves in an unusual situation whereby they have to work in unison to help the former get back his stolen passport to avoid missing a life changing interview. The producer, Vincent Okonkwo has said that the ghetto comedy will leave movie lovers spellbound. Casts of the movie include Mercy Johnson-Okojie, Adedimeji Lateef, Jim Iyke, Jide Kosoko, Zubby Micheal, and many more.
4. Hey You
Hey You is a romantic comedy by Anthill studios to be directed by fast-rising filmaker, Uyoyou Adia. Coming after Inkblot’s Charge and Bail, Hey You is scripted by Adia and will premiere in cinemas this year. This movie comes in the wake of the Akinmolayan directed crime drama, The Man for The Job. The details of the movie may be under wraps but we are still looking forward to what Anthill studios has in store for us.
5. Yahoo Plus
Emeka Njoku’s Yahoo Plus is another movie we are looking forward to. The movie’s plot is centred around two childhood friends from eastern Nigeria who try to break into Nollywood. In the end they are influenced by pressure and eventually turn to diabolical means to make money. Yahoo Plus makes references to the quick money syndrome currently going round in Nigeria along with the Nigerian pop culture. The name of the movie Yahoo Plus is a slang that refers to the blend of internet fraud and black magic. This movie has already bagged the Best Narrative Feature award at the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival. The official release date still remains unknown. Some of the cast are Somadima Adinma, Ken Erics and Ifeoma Obinwa.
