Babajide Sanwo-Olu Declares War On Lagos Roads

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos state, has ordered the immediate revamp of Lagos roads with immediate effect.

What happened?

As climate change renders rainy and dry seasons near invalid, Lagosians have had negative experiences with the decay in the state’s road infrastructure. This has proved one of the key issues raised against Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the opening months of his tenure. In response to this, the Governor has declared a total revamp on the roads.

According to Gboyega Akosile, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, works were meant to start on Monday and a total of eight construction companies have been deployed to fix the roads. While the highways are being renovated, the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) will be carrying out repairs of 116 inner roads across the state.

Some of the roads include Ojota stretch of the Ikorodu road, Motorways-Kudirat Abiola way, Apogbon highway, Babs Animashaun road, Agric/Ishawo and Ijede roads in Ikorodu and Lekki-Epe expressway from Abraham Adesanya to Eleko junction.

These bad roads have indirectly caused a hike in transportation fare, accidents and the spate of traffic. Car owners, also have to visit the mechanic more often for one repair or the other.

Significance of the Governor’s decision

Fixing the roads is a welcome development that will help everyone as this change may potentially reduce the cost of transportation, reduce traffic and ease the stress and transportation of goods and services.
