Barry Jhay Switches Up On ‘Son of God’ EP

Posted on

Known for his Afropop sound on popular songs like Olodo and Melanin, Nigerian artist Barry Jhay switches things up in his latest body of work titled Son of God; playing around with a couple of music genres including trap. The 7-track EP shows off his artistic growth and captures his evolution as a human being as it offers some insight into his life.

The project kicks off with Level Up, a trap joint on which he acknowledges the never-dying hustle spirit of every youth in recent times. On Story, he uses a diaristic narrative to reel the listener in with proverbial lyrics as he recalls his life trajectory from an interesting background as the son to Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and grandson to I.K. Dairo.

Agege, the next song follows the religious theme implied in the title, as well as Whine My God and Right By You which touches on love & reassurance with Kuami Eugene. Barry enlists popular Nigerian rapper Zlatan Ibile on the remix of his 2021 Ampiano single Aiyewada, a celebratory song about being free from negativity and setbacks. Threading his trademark lush chords on the project from start to finish, he commits his heart’s desires into God’s hands on the closing track Bless Me.

Talking about the EP, Barry says,

“This EP means a lot to me, as it is dedicated to my late brother Kashy and it is also to mark the beginning of a new phase of my life and career. I’ve got other projects in the works, but I had to get this out of the way first, to pour out all the emotions I’ve kept hidden away for a while. As usual, it’s relatable music and I believe a lot of people will resonate with my words.’’

This new EP comes after he won The Best New Act of the Year at City People Music Awards in 2018 and The Rookie of the year award at The 2019 Headies Awards.
