A*POP isn’t a disappointing album because it is poorly made, it’s disappointing because it was marketed as a fearless leap into African electronic-pop innovation and mostly settled into safe, radio-friendly pop and R&B with occasional South African accents. The neon rollout, the tracklist reveal, the framing around “the A in pop” all promised something the record only delivers in flashes.

Obi’s answer, so far, has been serial departure, five parties without pausing long enough at any one of them to leave it stronger than he found it. Charisma got him 6.1 million votes and a historic win in Lagos and the FCT, but it has not shown any sign of getting him anywhere near the seat of power, the coalition arithmetic that turned Buhari’s fourth attempt into Nigeria’s first opposition victory at the polls is still missing.
