William Onyeabor is one of the most fascinating stories ever told in Nigerian popular culture. Regarded as the pioneer of a unique brand of Funk, Afro Funk, Onyeabor’s pop culture influence has been a media phenomenon of sorts in recent years. His son, Charles has taken the musical reins and made his mark. On the back of his debut album, Like Father, Like Son- released in November 2023 was well regarded for its homage to the older Onyeabor’s legacy and exploration of a wide array of themes.
He doubles down on that with the release of his latest single, Money Talks, off his forthcoming sophomore album slated for release this year. Throughout the track, he addressed the societal obsession with wealth and the ensuing ills. Money Talks delves deep into the pervasive issues related to materialism and the detrimental effects it has on society. With his distinct blend of Afrobeat rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics, Charles Onyeabor challenges listeners to reflect on their values and the true cost of their pursuits.
Adding to the excitement, the official music video for Sawa, the lead single from Onyeabor’s debut album Like Father, Like Son, has also been released. Sawa has been celebrated for its uplifting melodies and its fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds, demonstrating Onyeabor’s unique musical vision. Onyeabor’s collaboration with Ejima 042 on the track Ije Nwoke continues to gain traction.
