Following his feature on Blaqbonez’s February release Breaking The Yoke Of Love, Chike has joined forces with Oxlade on the remix of his record, Spell, which was on his 16-song 2022 sophomore LP, The Brother’s Keeper. The song, with its relatable lyrics and captivating visuals, conveys themes of seduction, love, romance, and lust. Chike had a busy year so far in 2023; the dulcet-toned singer has presented a number of concerts already, evolving the grand scope of his R&B-inspired records into performative mode.
On the music front, Chike wields the golden appeal of his sophomore LP, The Brother’s Keeper, reimagining its pieces through immersive entries into wider pockets of media. In January, Chike shared evocative visuals for On the Moon. An ecclesiastical opener to TBK, the showcase of aspirational glitz was an excellent continuation of Chike’s character development. Especially in the context of the album, where personal ambition often clashed with the changing natures of love.
DeeYasso- produced Spell describes the conflicting emotions of wanting to move ahead in love, even though the union works to the detriment of one’s own development—over glossy piano notes, Chike sang in a vulnerable style reminiscent of soul classics, while polishing homeward influences with his grasp on Nigerian lingo and its implications.
Now sharing the Spell remix, Chike joins forces with Oxlade. Himself known for narratives bridging romantic desire with personal conviction, the KU LO SA vocalist complements the emotional dosage Chike renders on wax. Their link-up gets fitting visuals from Director Pink of Pinkline Films, showcasing the musicians in warm colours to be released at a later date. From scenes replete with beautiful models to a sky-toned staircase that makes for a stirring background, it’s a simple, sensual video that highlights the intimate vision of the record. Chike has always been big on visuals and Spell (Remix) is no different. Joining this set of distinct images to its heartwarming message, he charges the narrative towards exuberant highs. Love, he seems to say, can never lack the good burst of emotions to water its fountain.
