Chike Returns To Melt Hearts With “Ego Oyibo”

Chike’s Ego Oyibo, is his first release of a year that has already gone past its halfway mark, but he shows on the RnB-folk crafted song that some things are just worth the wait. Carrying the same heart-on-sleeve vulnerability that brought his 2020 release, If You No Love to prominence and cut from the same folksy, romantic cloth that made Roju the soundtrack to so many weddings, Ego Oyibo proves Chike still holds the keys to every lovelorn heart.

The song’s title is carved from a popular Igbo phrase, one that is often used to refer to a woman’s beauty as valuable or priceless. Chike brings all of his signature tools to create a track worthy of this title. His passion is stark in the way he contorts his voice to express his longing for a lover—“Na only picture I see/ Baby come back to me”, while the provider in him shines through when he readily offers to take care of her family.

Chike is the man who gave us Boo Of The Booless on Valentine’s day of 2020, offering a warm hug at a time when the pandemic pulled us away from our real-life partners. Two years later, he widened his thematic tapestry with The Brother’s Keeper, taking on more serious topics like growth and grief. On Ego Oyibo, Chike, aided by his go-to producer, DeeYasso, reminds us that he is still the big-hearted romantic we met three years ago. The song moves with a mid-tempo stride that would fit in anywhere from a mellow groove to a buzzing party, but you can just picture it was ultimately made for the wedding dance floor.
