Mama Ify plays a pivotal role in Gangs of Lagos. As a single mother, she works as a market woman in the streets of Isale Eko where the movie’s story plays out, and raised her son, Ify, alone after the death of his father at a young age. A loving mother who supports her son in pursuing his dreams as an artist, Mama Ify also creates a safe space for Ify and his friends Obalola & Gift.

After her son’s gruesome murder, Mama Ify becomes the call to action which triggers the gang wars in Isale Eko. Her speech at his funeral is the catalyst that pushes Obalola and his gang to rise into action and retaliate against Ify’s death.

Chioma Chukwuka is Mama Ify

Can you tell us about your experience working on Gangs of Lagos and your character, the mother of Ify?

It was such an experience embodying the character Mama Ify. From the day I got the script, till the day principal photography for the character was canned, it was just awesome. The cast, crew, and director were all so amazing. We had challenges just like every other film production but because everyone who was in that project came to deliver, it seemed like a piece of cake. Mama Ify was or is an Igbo trader who single-handedly raised her children amidst all the challenges she faces in the heart of Lagos, Isale Eko.

What was it like working alongside the other actors, particularly Tobi Bakre and Adesua Etomi-Wellington?

Simply beautiful and quite fun. I’ve always loved Adesua and Tobi, so it was just so easy working with them. We goofed a lot on set whenever we got the chance.

Can you tell us about the relationship between your character and Ify, her son in the film?

Mama Ify has a very healthy relationship with Ify and her son. They were closely bonded and we became more like friends. Ify was raised properly.

How do you think your character’s story adds to the overall narrative of the film?

Mama Ify’s character brought a major turnaround to the way the story of Gangs of Lagos turned out. It set the tone.

The film features a diverse cast and crew. How important do you think diversity is in the film industry?

Nigeria is a country of diverse cultures and ethnicities and so it was eminent that GOL portrayed this, and also being that Lagos is one of the most liberal states in Nigeria

What do you hope audiences will take away from your performance in the film?

Love. Care. Strength. Perseverance. Loyalty
