Coco Benson Wants Women To Be Treated Like Royalty On ‘Majesty’

In 2014, Coco Benson, with her ties to foundational highlife, forayed into the African music space, with a handful of hit singles, including the eponymously titled, They Call Me Coco and a modern reworking of her grandfather’s breakthrough hit, Taxi Driver, which put her on the map as one to watch across Africa. It’s been more than six years since her debut, but this month, the Michigan-born Nigerian singer, circles back to making music that matters, with the highly anticipated, Majesty.

With Shizzi providing the lush afro-house musical backdrop for Benson’s audacious words, Majesty is not just a superb return to form for her, it is also the perfect dancefloor filler and soundtrack for the upcoming sun-kissed summer and festival season.

For the accompanying royal-themed music video, Benson collaborates with video director, Mickey Johnson, creative director Ganyo Bi Dindin, and choreographer Nela, in Accra in Ghana to showcase the majesty of women, and to highlight how they should be treated: like royalty.

Speaking about the inspiration behind Majesty, Benson says:

Women do it all, women are the backbone to a lot of great things, and this track pays homage to women and speaks to empowering women. I wanted to create a song that every woman or girl could relate to, we are all ‘Majesty’ to someone and it’s something to embrace. This track has my two favorite elements – the house and soulful music vibes, and once Shizzi added his magic finger touches and some amapiano sensibilities, we knew this song would turn out to be a timeless record.
