One of Dave’s greatest artistic achievements asides his recently snagged Mercury Prize is the organic nature of his role as Modie on the Drake-produced Top Boy. He’s shown us different sides of his eccentric persona and the way he naturally settled into his character as a drug dealer is just another indication of how talented he is. A couple of months ago, he shared his first single, Professor X, from the show’s titular OST album. This week, he shares the futuristic video for the self-produced track.
Along with long-time collaborator and video director, Nathan Tettey, Dave relives his systemic narrative in several virtual reality scenes in which he poses as the referenced Professor X. Atop more flashy backdrops, Dave dispenses bar after bar in his usual cadence alluding to his top-dog status as not just Modie but a grime artist on the rise with the strength and relevance of an old-timer.
