After giving her fans back-to-back EPs, Sierra Leonean-Nigerian singer, actress, visual artist and songwriter Di’Ja also known as APHRODIJA has come out with her first record of the year titled Yoruba Demon. Yoruba Demon is off her upcoming album titled Late Comer which is scheduled for release later in the year.
Di’Ja, whose real name is Hadiza Blell-Olo, is no newcomer to the game. She has been making music for over 10 years now, and has said she only took time off to take care of her family and is back and ready to take over. Di’Ja has a lot of great records to her credit, some of which include Awww, Amen, Air, Sowemo, Falling for You ft Patoranking, Radio, and now she adds her freshly brewed Yoruba Demon to the list.
While Di’Ja was away from the music industry for some time, she has been busy pursuing other creative ventures such as making her debut on the big screen in 2020 and going on to feature in more movies such as TOOT (The Order Of Things): a romantic comedy directed by Dr Sid. In an Instagram post addressing her hiatus from the music scene, Di’Ja wrote ”It’s been a journey and the most amazing thing about it is that I literally only just started. After three amazing beautiful babies, I never thought I’ll feel the sense of confidence I have now. My children saved my life and I owe it to them to kill this shit this time around.”
On a track that features soothing guitars and an overall energetic cadence, Di’Ja recounts her interesting experience of the love of a “Yoruba demon.” On the first verse of the single, she sings “Everyone dey find that somebody (yeah). Way be say go make their life complete. I been think say I find somebody. Way go make me spend my money. Make me come dey do like Zombie. But it make a fool of me,” as she adds to the popular narrative that Yoruba men are to be feared because they cheat a lot. She continues on a similar trajectory when she sings “Ahhhh. Yoruba demons. Hahnnnn. You can never see them coming. Them go play you like ping pong. When you see them better start running” on a chorus that’s as catchy as it is controversial.
Overall, Di’Ja’s Yoruba Demon is a super catchy track that was smoothly executed and will most likely be a staple in the playlists of those who are enthusiastic about the Yoruba demon narrative. The visuals to Yoruba Demon premiered alongside the track and it was directed by Unlimited LA for Dijanation.
