Disney Releases Trailer For Anticipated Sci-fi Animation series, “Iwájú”

Walt Disney Animation Studios has released the official trailer for highly anticipated sci-fi animation series Iwájú. Iwájú, a Yoruba word which roughly translates as “the future”, is set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. The Yoruba are a West African ethnic group based in Nigeria, Benin and Togo.

Iwájú tells the coming-of-age story of Tola, a young girl who hails from a wealthy island, and her best friend Kole, a tech expert, as they navigate the dangers and secrets of their worlds. Their friendship is tested by a ruthless tech pioneer, Bode, who is protective of a criminal underworld. 

The series, which is produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by both Halima Hudson and Adeola, features the voices of Nigerian-American actor Dayo Okeniyi, British-Nigerian actress Weruche Opia, Kehinde Bankole, Simisola Gbadamosi, Shaffy Bello, Bisola Aiyeola, Tosin Oshinaike, Siji Soetan and Lala Akindoju who is equally the casting director. 

Regarding the forthcoming project, Disney Studios is partnership with Kugali Media, a Pan-African entertainment company. Kugali Media will also release a documentary titled Iwájú: A Day Ahead that reveals the story of the Pan-African establishment. 

A story created by Hamid Ibrahim, Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku and Ziki Nelson who doubles as the series’ director, Iwájú is slated for an exclusive US  debut on Disney+ on February 24, 2024. Release dates for other regions, including Nigeria, will be subsequently announced.
