The Super Eagles succumbed to defeat against South Africa as they launched their bid for qualification for the 2019 AFCON competition. The fixture which took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Akwa Ibom was the story of an attacking side who found no breakthroughs before being on the receiving end of a near-post header and calm collected finish from Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau, respectively.

With the win, South Africa brought a winless streak of 25 years against Nigeria to an end.

The game left Nigeria in shock after they expected to come away with a victory but saw their failure to deliver in the final third hurt them.
