End of Year Review: Kendall Jenner Award for Breakout Star of the Year

Posted on

Oluwamayowa Idowu: Kendell Jenner. It might seem weird to name someone who’s been on one of the most identifiable reality shows of the last decade as a breakout star but 2014 was the year in which the first of the Jenner girls truly came into her own. She’s worked with fashion heavyweights like Riccardo Tisci (Givenchy),  Marc Jacobs, Olivier Rousteing (Balmain) whilst doing runway gigs for  Diane von Furstenberg, Tommy Hilfiger and Dolce & Gabbana. She’s also been named the face of Chanel (Karl Lagerfeld being Creative Director) and Estée Lauder. And she’s done it being herself. No gimmicks. At 19, she’s undoubtedly the most marketable Kardashian-Jenner which is surely a laudable feat.

A word for Aaron Ramsey, the Welsh Beckham who ended Arsenal’s trophy drought.

Honourable mention to Sam Smith, YG and Patoranking.

Temitayo Ayorinde: Chris Pratt. Duh again.

Amaka Onyemenam: Lupita Nyong’o.

I’m indifferent towards her as an actress (haven’t seen much of her onscreen) but I admire the effect her person as a brand has had so far.

Media coverage of her thus far thrusts a confounding view of black women into the limelight: well educated, affluent, graceful, successful. What with the Lancôme ad campaigns et al, I truly hope that females like her continue to help cast a better light on the narrative of black females. I want to watch as the ‘blackness’ of her skin slowly, surely becomes a standard of ‘beautiful’ to the world.

Any form of inspiration, in this confusing world with our confusing and conflicting existences is always welcome:

“When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

Oh yes, Go Lupita!

Demola Fashola: Kendall Jenner. Kendall made 2014 a memorable one for herself by absolut shattering notions that a reality star couldn’t be taken seriously in the fashion world. But can you blame fashion?? Kendall is stunning! And tall and stunning!
