End of Year Review: Luis Suarez Award for Idiot of the Year

Posted on

Oluwamayowa Idowu: Luis Suarez, obviously. Who else could plant his gnashers into an opponent’s back and then claim “After the impact … I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent. At that moment I hit my face against the player, leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth”? A word also for his countrymen who constantly defend his indefensibles thus enabling his cannibalistic tendencies.

Aisha Modibbo: I would like to dedicate this one to the boys out there who had a chance before they messed it up. You’re headed for lives of similar fuck-ups guys, GOOD LUCK!

Temitayo Ayorinde: Piers Morgan. He constantly outdoes himself.

Amaka Onyemenam: Doyin Okupe takes this award. Very few, if any statements he’s made this year are proper.

Nigerian politicians generally play the game with very little skill. Very few are bothered to try to dictate the narrative. Okupe is one of such exemplifiers. And as an SSA on Public Affairs, that is a painful irony. He is inexplicably prompted to make statements that show he is tone deaf as regards the situation in the nation.

“I have never hustled for bread all my life. I was born into wealth and I have always lived in comfort from successful enterprises. I also have nine children. Many of them are better educated and cultured and are moving on successfully in life,”

I don’t think it matters the context. You do not, as a politician of sorts, make reckless statements like that in a country where 70% of the populace live on a dollar a day.

I pray to God for Nigeria, that he has no political future.

Demola Fashola: Justin Bieber. He just is. Period. No further explanation required.
