The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially unveiled Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The event, held at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, drew sports enthusiasts and professionals eager to witness the beginning of a new chapter for Nigerian football under the guidance of the 47-year-old Franco-Malian.
Chelle’s appointment follows a decision by the NFF Executive Committee, based on a recommendation from its Technical and Development Committee. NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, expressed optimism about the new coach’s ability to lead the Super Eagles to new heights, urging Nigerians to rally behind him. “We understand the passion Nigerians have for football, which is why there have been varied reactions to this appointment,” Gusau stated. “However, we appeal for unity and support, as we believe Coach Chelle has the qualities to achieve success with the team.” He also reassured fans that the Federation would provide all necessary backing for the coach’s success.
Chelle brings a wealth of experience to the role, having played as a center-back during his career, mostly in French clubs such as Valenciennes and Lens. Internationally, he represented Mali between 2004 and 2006. Transitioning into coaching, Chelle managed teams like FC Martigues and US Boulogne in France before taking charge of Mali’s national team in 2022. Under his guidance, Mali reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but narrowly missed advancing further after a loss to hosts Ivory Coast. His tenure with Mali ended in 2024, after which he managed Algerian side MC Oran.
Now at the helm of the Super Eagles, Chelle faces an immediate challenge in reviving Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With the team currently fourth in Group C, having only three points from four matches, the pressure is on to secure positive results in upcoming fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. These games, scheduled for March, are critical to keeping Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.
Chelle’s appointment has generated mixed reactions among fans. While some are optimistic about his international experience and understanding of African football dynamics, others remain cautious, pointing to his relatively modest coaching record. Nevertheless, the NFF has emphasized the importance of unity, urging all stakeholders to give him the necessary support to succeed.
As the football community eagerly watches, Chelle’s ability to adapt to the high expectations of Nigerian football will be tested in the coming months. With the combined support of the NFF and fans, the Super Eagles are poised to begin a new journey under their new coach, aiming to restore their status as a powerhouse in African and global football.
