2021 was a phenomenal year for Nigerian R&B. Acts like Tiwa Savage, Tems, Ayra Starr, and Fave ran the charts at certain points with their remarkable interpretations of R&B and Pop with a Nigerian flavor. For the latter, the success of her single, Baby Riddim catapulted her from the upcoming phase to the mainstream. 45 million streams, 600,000 TikTok videos with over 30 million views, peaking at #1 on the Shazam Global Afrobeats and iTunes Nigeria charts later, she releases her debut EP, Riddim 5.
For an artist whose breakout came via a series of bedroom freestyles, the last couple of years have witnessed accelerated growth from her performance on Olamide’s Pon Pon to an affiliation with Mr Eazi’s Empawa initiative and her latest release marks the culmination of that growth. Fave has perfected the art of fusing sultry and addictive Afropop melodies with tropical Caribbean influences and this shines through on Riddim 5. Speaking of the new project, she said
“The sounds in my head that want to come out are finally getting the chance. For me, it’s not the number of songs out but the number of songs I get to create over time, and this is because of a ranging number of reasons—my favourite (one) being that I get to see different sides of me. I’m never slacking on a chance to unlock a phase.”
