Fireboy DML’s sophomore album, Apollo, as persona-defining as it was, passed by without as much fanfare as his debut, Laughter, Tears, And Goosebumps, pulled. In a manner that speaks to an adoption of a new style stemming from lessons learned, he returns today with Peru, a synth-hollowed stopgap to whet the appetites of his fans as he works hard to put together an album with a much higher replay value than its predecessor.
Rife with metaphors and a Peruzzi reference that cushions Shizzi’s snare-driven instrumental, one that perfectly punctuates each line of Fireboy DML, Peru, despite its looseness, hints at Fireboy’s evolved state likely to power the forthcoming album.
Fireboy DML has a brilliant ear for what keeps his fanbase on their toes and though he might not have exactly gotten it on Apollo, Peru is a definite indication of a turning point.
