Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre is set to return in March, following its first part which was released in 2022.
Produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan, Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre was created at KAP Film Village in Igbojaiye, Ibadan. The trailer released on Netflix’s official page showed leading events revolving around the main character and his beloved Arolake, and we see that Saro (Kunle Remi) is still alive after being left for dead by the King’s men in Anikulapo.
Anikulapo, which got 16 nominations at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), won five awards, including Best Movie in Africa and Best Soundtrack. Afolayan returns with yet another Nigerian epic fantasy in Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre. In a 2022 interview with the Guardian U.K., he speaks about his expectations for the project. “I’ve been working on Anikulapo for six years. Originally, I wanted to make a series but I shopped it and kept telling people that this movie would be bigger than Game of Thrones. Eventually, Netflix told me to make a movie first since I believed in the project that much, and if it became a success, we’d develop a series.”
The series will reprise its original cast like Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Ogogo Taiwo Hassan, as well as fresh faces like Gabriel Afolayan, Lateef Adedimeji, and Owo Ogunde.
Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre will have six episodes and will premiere exclusively on Netflix on March 1.
