Nigerian filmmaker and CEO of Anthill Studios, Niyi Akinmolayan, is set to release a documentary titled Rainmakers.
The documentary features twenty rainmakers from three different Nigerian states, exploring the mystical art of rainmaking in comparison with scientific weather predictions. The filmmaker stated that the results of weather app predictions were juxtaposed with the powers of tradition, including deities Agemo, Sango and Osun.
“In 2022, I picked up a camera, traveled with Ade Obatoyinbo and a cam team to Ogun, Oyo and Edo states to meet with rainmakers and test their powers against scientific predictions,” said Niyi Akinmolayan in an Instagram post, highlighting the background to the forthcoming documentary. “I did all the necessary rituals and learnt a lot about rainmaking and the all powerful Sango deity.”
Niyi Akinmolayan is one of the most successful Nollywood filmmakers, with some of his films, such as The Wedding Party 2 and Chief Daddy, ranking among the highest grossing Nigerian films ever. He is also the founder and creative director of Anthill Studios, and his most recent films are Mikolo and The House of Secrets.
Rainmakers is narrated by Ade Obatoyinbo, and produced and directed by Niyi Akinmolayan. The documentary will be available from March 1, 2024 on Prime Video.
