Did you know that there are approximately 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide? Can you imagine all the different ways in which we all use the internet? Obasanjo’s Internet is our interview series where we speak to some of our internet favorites on how they relate to the internet and what it means to them and their work. This week, screenwriter, director, and producer Dare Olaitan lets us know what he gets up to on Obasanjo’s Internet.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I go to the gym.
How do you use the internet: for work or pleasure?
For work mostly, I tend to use the internet to find out what’s going on in my industry and stay up to date.
What moment or episode in your life would you say captured the essence of the internet?
Before I got into college, I hadn’t been in the habit of watching films because I had been in boarding school. But the access to Netflix, streaming and being able to rent DVDs made me fall in love with movies and that’s one thing the internet did for me.
Your favourite social media platform and why?
I’d say Twitter and that’s probably because I’ve been using it for the longest time and that’s where most of my friends are.
What was the last meme you saved?
Do you remember the first time something you posted went viral? What was it? How did it make you feel?
I can’t remember the first time, but I remember the funny one. I think I was on a flight from Paris to Nigeria and that was the Game Of Thrones finale so I posted something about it and before I landed I had over ten thousand mentions and I was like “what the fuck did I do?” it was just the Game Of Thrones thing.
What’s the most outrage you have ever generated over something you posted? How did you react to it?
I can’t remember, it happens too many times.
What rules do you live by on the internet?
Just stay in your lane.
What is your guiltiest online pleasure?
Probably YouTube?
Would you say you have an online persona?
No, same old guy.
What’s your favourite emoji and why?
🤖 Probably because that’s my face most of the time?
Are you particular about your feed?
Um, not really, no.
YouTube or TikTok? Which do you prefer and why?
YouTube because it’s long-form and easier for me to find what I’m looking for there, I’m not really with TikTok, I’m old.
Which Nigerian creator do you think the world needs to see and hear more of?
Probably me, the fuck?
Who is the coolest person you follow and the coolest person who follows you?
That’s a difficult question, I don’t know. I don’t think anyone is cool so I’m like huh? I don’t got anybody. Fuck all these niggas.
What is your favourite Nigerian podcast?
Um, Submaroach and I Said What I Said.
Have you ever hooked up with someone you met online?
Everyone I’ve met is online, what the hell?
5 people you’d love to see answer these questions
I don’t really have anyone in mind right now.
