Did you know that there are approximately 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide? Can you imagine all the different ways in which we all use the internet? Obasanjo’s Internet is our interview series where we speak to some of our internet favourites on how they relate to the internet and what it means to them and their work. This week, Media and Music professional (Native Records, Kulupsy Media), Feyisola “Kulupsy” Ogunbanjo, talks to us about how she uses Obasanjo’s Internet.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Oh, wow. The first thing I do when I wake up? I check Twitter and then I go have ginger tea.
How do you use the Internet? For work or pleasure?
For pleasure. I really, really hate it when people who work in music always talk about music facts and all those things. I don’t wanna be on there talking about the keys to the music industry. Please! No! So most of the time I just go to Twitter to laugh. I see something funny, laugh, move on. And sometimes, I retweet my artists’ things. I be subbing my employer there as well. Like yesterday, there was this tweet where some girl said she got a £800 bonus from the office. I just had to retweet it and put a funny gif there.
What moment or episode in your life would you say captured the essence of the internet?
Wow. The pandemic. Woah woah woah the pandemic in my life. I was doing so much on the internet. I was doing all these TikTok dances, I was doing Friday night lives with my friends – I think “conversations with K” – some shit like. So many fun things. I think that kind of captured the essence of the internet for me. Everyone was doing something funny. You remember when they were doing this football thing? That everyone was kicking the ball in the pandemic? It was so much fun.
Your favourite social media platform and why?
I think I kind of already answered that while we’re speaking, but it’s definitely Twitter. On Twitter, you can just talk fam. There’s access to everybody, anybody can be anybody. Just make an account and be someone else and just start clowning guys or doing some shit.
And I feel like it exposes you to the way other people think and see things, more than any visual platforms like Instagram or Snapchat. I think Twitter is just like speaking into the void sometimes. That’s honestly why I like the platform. It’s also just accessibility – I hate it for the same reason I love it. The fact that anyone can just tweet at me is really annoying but for the fact that I can just tweet at anyone? Woah. It is what it is.
What was the last meme you saved?
Do you remember the first time something you posted went viral? What was it? How did it make you feel?
Oh God. Not a lot of things I post go viral, which I thank God for because I really hate the attention. But I went to Nok (by Alara) on this fateful day wearing this JBottoms mesh top and I posted a picture which I captioned “Amala” because obviously I was eating Amala. But all people could talk about were my breasts in the mesh top. That picture fully entered every part of Twitter I can think of right now and that was so, so, so annoying. But yeah, that was it. I don’t really say my thoughts on Twitter. I am one of those people that they’ll be clowning someone for saying what I think and I’ll just be laughing.
Oh my God. I remember recently one of my artists was just saying things on Twitter. He was being misogynistic right and I called him out on it and obviously did what any manger would do – tell him why and all of that – but he was still going off because he felt slighted. Like someone was coming for him. I felt like yo this guy doesn’t even understand.
So I was reading an article my friend had sent me. I posted screenshots of some parts of the article and people were coming for me. I was like guys, no, I’m actually on your side. That day was really funny. So yeah, those are the two times I remember going viral. I just mute the tweets and move on to be fair. like, oh I was just like, wait guys.
What’s the most outrage you have ever generated over something you posted? How did you react to it?
The previous tweet. Honestly, I just muted it and moved on. I was just like opps, y’all are not gonna do this. Yo! People were being incendiary in my comments, even friends. I was like omo. This is a crazy one. I’ve entered it.
What rules do you live by on the internet?
Wow! Okay that’s a good question cause I feel like I have different rules for myself and different rules for other people. For me, if you’re going to catch me doing anything on Twitter it’ll be being funny, tweeting funny stuff. While for people, I like it when people speak their mind even though I would never. So I really appreciate people that just say what they’re thinking. I think it is very very brave, especially people who are kind of controversial and don’t care what people think. I tend to appreciate when people live by those rules, but for me? I just like to have fun. I think Twitter should be a fun place.
What is your guiltiest online pleasure?
Baby Slander! And dark humor. Yo! There was this video – I don’t even know how to say this that it won’t sound somehow. There was this video and these two miniature people were in wheelchairs and they were kissing. Somebody commented “what the hell is going on here” and somebody said “wow there really is someone for everyone.” Guy like the comments section for that post was so funny. I was just like what the fuck? It was too funny.
And when they’re insulting babies mehn, it’s so funny. There was this trend where they said if you throw cheese on a baby when they’re crying, the baby will stop crying and people started throwing cheese on babies and they actually stopped crying. It was so funny. I love babies, but I love baby slander more.
Would you say you have an online persona?
I think I do but I’m not really sure what it is. I can’t lie, for a long time I tried not to have one. I just wanted to be under the radar. I used to do this thing where I’ll create new Twitter accounts once my followers hit 1000. I was so obsessed with having less than 1000 followers. I don’t even know why right now. I used to tell myself like, you know, I want to separate Feyisola from Kulupsy – ah, so stressful. People that knew me as Feyi, I didn’t want them to know me as Kulupsy. But right now I can’t separate the two. I feel like people just know me as either and some people who work with me know me as Feyisola Kulupsy. I’m just like, okay. I feel like I have a persona on Twitter now but I’m just not sure it’s defined.
Also, people think I’m really serious, especially because they tend to know me from work, which I can be very serious with. So it’s like they expect this serious Feyi or whatever while me i’m just trying to laugh. Everything is too serious in life you can’t just kill yourself. So I try to show that side of me on Twitter cause everything else about me screams workaholic, oh mummy K, whatever whatever, so it’s like you guys i’m actually not just work. I’m real. And I’m funny.
What’s your favourite emoji and why?
It’s that one with the doe eyes. It’s just cute. I like really cute things, let me not lie. My favorite colours are purple and pink. I’m that girl.
Are you particular about your feed?
No, I don’t really care, I can’t lie. Hmmm. That might be a lie. I care. I very much care about my feed. But am I particular about it? Not really but I just wouldn’t retweet sexual stuff – I am particular about my feed, yes. Yes. I just realized that while speaking. I wouldn’t retweet certain things to my feed.
YouTube or TikTok? Which do you prefer and why?
Hmmm. That’s a good one. The issue is I really like TikTok but I don’t think I prefer it to YouTube. I scroll through TikTok very mindlessly but I could get serious with YouTube. I watch a lot of stuff on YouTube including comedy show like Footlocker. So sometimes for me, YouTube is also mindless but I do be getting serious there. I use both of them for very different reasons but TikTok is very fun and YouTube is more serious for me so I’m not sure. They’re kinda on the same level.
Which Nigerian creator do you think the world needs to see and hear more of?
Oh my god. Bidemi Tata for sure. He is so crazy. I think Africa is just like this crazy hub that people need to touch grass more. Bidemi needs a lot of visibility. His work is so dope. He’s been working with YP since YP season 2 and he’s been doing all the art stuff for YP and I think he’s really cool.
Who is the coolest person you follow and the coolest person who follows you?
Who do I consider cool? That’s even the first question. Omg. Tmt! I think Tmt is very funny. With humour, I like when there is some nuance. He’s not so obvious. He’s very funny but he’s not trying to be funny. The coolest person who follows me? I love my Gen Zs. Temitoyourscreen.
What is your favourite Nigerian podcast?
Hmmm. I’m glad you said Nigerian sha. It was really Subamaroach but then I really started listening to Problem Man – mehn It’s still submaraoch. Sorry. Submaraoch is my favourite podcast. It is what it is.
Have you ever hooked up with someone you met online? Did you regret it?
Hooked up?! That’s a lot oh. I’ve never hooked up with anybody I’ve met online. Everybody I’ve hooked up with is somebody that I’ve met in real life, then we met each other’s online persona. I don’t know, like it doesn’t work for me. I don’t understand it. But you know, Twitter is a very lovely place to meet somebody because obviously you already know that your views are aligned with this person, but it hasn’t happened for me.
