Did you know that there are approximately 4.66 billion active Internet users worldwide? Can you imagine all the different ways in which we all use the Internet? Obasanjo’s Internet is our interview series where we speak to some of our Internet favourites on how they relate to the Internet and what it means to them and their work. This week, music producer, Trill Xoe, talks to us about how he uses Obasanjo’s Internet.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I pray.
How do you use the Internet for work or pleasure?
When I started making music, the Internet was the first place I tried connecting with artists. Before I worked with Boj I always spammed him with messages on Instagram, and coincidentally after I produced a song he was featured on he saw my messages and was like “so na you make this beat?” then he laughed at my old messages.
What moment or episode in your life would you say captured the essence of the Internet?
It would be when the Declan Rice song dropped because that was when people realised I co-produced it alongside John, one of 44DB Collective members.
Your favourite social media platform and why?
I love Twitter, I can’t even lie. It’s one of the most beautiful platforms out there and it’s so hilarious. Shout out to Elon Musk because you see everything on Twitter – it could be a random day and I’ll see the craziest thing.
What was the last meme you saved?
Do you remember the first time something you posted went viral? What was it? How did it make you feel?
It was when Arsenal announced Declan Rice with the song. I tweeted that Arsenal was posting a song I produced and it went crazy. I don’t like notifications so I had to mute it, but I was shocked ’cause I didn’t know many people fucked with me. It was a nice feeling, honestly.
What’s the most outrage you have ever generated over something you posted? How did you react to it?
I think it’s when I posted that people who hate amala are weird or something like that. There are some people who genuinely hate amala and I don’t understand it. I was just laughing at their responses.
What rules do you live by on the Internet?
I honestly don’t live by any rules, but you know how guys force being “savage” online? I hate that. I just try to be respectful. People have their own opinions and I’m not trying to force mine on them. If I see something I don’t fuck with, I scroll past without interacting.
What is your guiltiest online pleasure?
I like to save cooking recipes knowing I won’t use them. My algorithm on TikTok and Instagram mostly shows food I know I have no business cooking, but I’m still going to save and share them with my guys.
Would you say you have an online persona?
When I meet some people on the Internet they think I’m this antisocial guy who just focuses on music, but when they meet me in person they’re like “ahan this isn’t what you’re like on the Internet”. They think I’m a mysterious and misunderstood guy, but I’m far from that. I’m just a nice, cute guy.
What’s your favourite emoji and why?
“🤣”. It’s just hilarious. I use it when I’m trying to troll people and it gets them upset. It can be used in different ways and I love it.
Are you particular about your feed?
I’m very particular about it. I just want to see music, food, my friends and fine women.
YouTube or TikTok? Which do you prefer and why?
YouTube. It saved my ass in school and when I started producing. I studied computer science and it get some courses wey I fit don miss class or something, na youtube dey for me. Shoutout to the Indians.
Which Nigerian creator do you think the world needs to see and hear more of?
My boy, Derek. He’s a very good content creator. He’s a producer and artist as well but he’s been doing more content creation and he’s killing it.
Korty for sure and Ola of Lagos – the world needs to see that guy, he’s killing it.
Fisayo my Tech bro and Hitsound, he’s a producer who’s trying to break the record for the longest recording session.
Who is the coolest person you follow and the coolest person who follows you?
I no go lie, it’s me. No one cool pass me on the Internet. But I’ll say Fresh L is the funniest person I follow but the coolest is still me.
What is your favourite Nigerian podcast?
Submarine and A Roach, F&S Uncensored and Osikoya Speaks.
Have you ever hooked up with someone you met online? Did you regret it?
Yes, I have, and nah I won’t say I regret it.
5 people you’d love to see answer these questions
Odumodublvck, Davido, Korty, Layi Wasabi and Ola of Lagos.
