Pa Salieu has had an impressive run this year. From emerging as the BBC Sound of 2021 winner to stellar collaborations with the likes of Ghetts, Slowthai and Backroad Gee, Pa Salieu consistently reaffirms his position as a notable artist. His 2020 mixtape Send Them To Coventry was filled with stories of friendship, pain and loss however, his newest three- track EP Afrikan Rebel shows Pa Salieu in a totally different light.
On this EP, Pa Salieu draws heavily on Afrobeat inspired sounds which add to his unique style. This EP sees Pa Salieu fully embrace his African heritage by collaborating with the likes of Tay Iwar, Zlatan and Obongjayar, blending sounds from both Nigeria and Gambia. According to Pa Salieu, Afrikan Rebel is about “Being proud and loud about where you come from.” That pride is shown on each and every track.
The opening track Shining highlights Pa Salieu’s drive to succeed. The P2J produced track not only displays Pa Salieu’s lyrical ability but also Zlatan’s unique flow, both of which are brought together by Tay Iwar’s soothing hook.
On the Amapiano inspired track Style & Fashion, Pa Salieu touches on his encounter with a beautiful girl who catches his eye at a party. He glides effortlessly on this hypnotic beat by combining catchy melodies with equally catchy lyrics.
Closing the Afrikan Rebel EP is Lit– a hard hitting track that displays Pa Salieu in his element. Lit is the perfect ending to this short but powerful project. The high energy production and raw lyrics end the EP with a bang!
