2018 will go down as the year Hip-Hop in Nigeria went through the reforming fire pioneers like M.I dreamed of in his early days when he questioned the authenticity and durability of the feeble music scene in our industry.
With artistes like Show Dem Camp, Loose Kaynon, A-Q, Zamir, LadiPoe, Blaqbonez, Kida Kudz and PsychoYP to mention a few and projects such as: Crown, A Study On Self Worth: Yxng Dxnzl, Bad Boy Blaq among others, it seems that the time for our Hip-Hop scene to become a strong contender for one of the best on the continent has come. We are steadily sailing past weak beats, unnecessary and poorly thought out lyricism and bursting into much deeper waters surrounded by thoughtful punchlines, steady rhythms, and commanding presence of artistes.
One artiste who is bursting into these waters is PsychoYP; whose project; Ypszn is an embodiment of the progress the Hip-Hop scene is undergoing. After proving to be more than just an underground act with Ypszn, he returns this month with yet another track titled To The Max that does nothing but substantiate the fact that he is aiming for a seat at the table of Superstars.
Over resonating trap beats and a vocal assist from Odunsi (The Engine), PsyhoYP sets the record straight naming himself as one who is ‘popping shit’ before the lyrics to follow prove exactly why he thinks that is so. PsychoYP who is lyrically capable of projecting everything from street life to introspective reflections, comfortably frolics with the bouncy soundscape and his lax but witty wordplay that will have you nodding your head to the rhythmic beats and relatable lyrics in no time.
