Sex is never just sex. Every week, we follow a thread of desire into stories about connection, vulnerability, and the twisting logic of intimacy. Today’s diary is from a woman who shared one unspoken afternoon with her closest friend, and then watched him marry her best friend.
Bashir and I have been friends since 200 level. He wasn’t the only male friend I had, but he was the closest. We talked more than I did with anyone else; we talked about school, random gossip, family, and we got each other’s jokes. It was easy being friends with him.
When our SIWES semester started, we ended up working at the same organization for six months. That period changed everything. Seeing each other almost every day, doing our assignments together, eating together, and we were always together to the point that people started to think that we were a thing, which was really funny at that time.
He started coming over to my place more often. He’d eat my food like he had a right to it, complain if I didn’t cook enough, and stretch out on my bed like it was his. I didn’t mind. I liked having him around. And sometimes, when the silence lingered a bit too long, something else would happen.
It started with his hand brushing against mine and staying there, sitting too close, and hugs that lasted a second longer than it should. Then the kisses, almost like we were both testing the waters, pretending it didn’t mean anything. We never talked about it. We would just… stop and go back to being normal.
I told myself it didn’t matter because I didn’t want him like that. He wasn’t someone I was trying to date. It just felt good at the moment, and I allowed it.
One afternoon, during one of his visits, I introduced him to my best friend, Salma. She had come over to help me pack because we were preparing to travel home for the holidays. The house was messy, clothes everywhere, bags, shoes, the house was basically a mess that day.
Salma has been my friend long before university. She knew me in ways no one else did. Or at least, I thought she did. Bashir is very good with people so it was no surprise when he joked with her, made her laugh, and within minutes it felt like they had known each other before. I didn’t think much of it at the time. That was just how he was, friendly, warm, a little too charming.
There were a few more hangouts after that. The three of us together are doing the things that I once did with them on separate occasions. Now we (Salma and I) will go to his house whenever we like, and he will do the same.
It was on one of those random visits when Bashir came around like he usually did. I was at home with Salma when he arrived. We had just cooked and were about to eat when he came.
He came in, dropped his bag, and immediately started complaining about being hungry. That was Bashir, food first, everything else later. I gave him a plate of spaghetti and a cold drink. He finished it quickly, as expected, and we all settled into casual conversation.
It felt like any other day. Then Salma said she needed to quickly get something down the street. I remember nodding absentmindedly as I moved our plates to the kitchen. By the time I came back to the room, Bashir was standing as if waiting for me to come out. I stared back at him. The whole room was quiet, so it was a bit uncomfortable not having anything distract me from whatever this was.
I don’t know who moved first. One second, we were staring at each other, and the next, we were touching each other as we had done before, but this time, there was no hesitation or pretending we would stop halfway.
It was like we were both aware of the limited time we had.
He kissed me, and I responded without thinking. My mind wasn’t processing consequences or meaning or what this would change. I was just there, caught up in the moment, in the familiarity of him, in the thrill of doing something we hadn’t done before.
Everything moved quickly. Too quickly for second thoughts, then it was over. We didn’t even speak to each other, we just did it, we had sex like it was just… something that happened. We got dressed,I sprayed the room with my perfume, fixed my hair, and we were sitting like nothing had happened, talking like we always did. By the time Salma returned, everything was like it was before she left, if she noticed anything, she didn’t say.
About 5 months later, Salma told me she and Bashir were now together. I remember the exact moment. The way she smiled when she said it. The excitement in her voice. She looked happy, really happy. I was shocked inside, but then I congratulated her immediately, and I said all the right things. But inside, I was confused because I couldn’t understand what his intentions were.
I was angry at him in a way I couldn’t fully explain. Their relationship slowly created distance between us. I didn’t want to be friends with him anymore. What kind of a friend would date your best friend without telling you about his intention first! I chose Salma. That part was never a question.
A year after we graduated, they got married. I sat there at the wedding, watching them smiling for pictures, celebrating with everyone else, dancing, but a part of me felt disconnected from the entire thing. I felt a kind of guilt that I was holding onto a secret from someone I cared deeply about. I also wondered if it was worth telling since it meant nothing to me at that time and even now. The situation was just weird and tricky, so I never told her, and I still haven’t.
Sometimes I wonder if he did. If there was ever a moment where he thought about it, where he considered telling her. Or if, like that day, he simply chose to move on and pretend it never happened.
I don’t regret it in the way people expect. I made that choice. But I do think about it sometimes.
