A devastating road accident near Zone 8 Roundabout in Lokoja has claimed the lives of six and left sixty others injured, marking another tragic incident in the state’s growing list of road casualties this year.
According to Samuel Oyedeji, State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the incident occurred around 3 pm on Tuesday when an articulated truck traveling from Bauchi to Enugu State lost control along Hassan Katsina Road.
“The remains of the six deceased were deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary,” Oyedeji confirmed.
An eyewitness described the scene as “horrific,” noting that “People were trapped and it took hours to clear the scene.”
This incident follows a deadly crash on April 1, 2024, where 13 people lost their lives in an accident involving a commercial Sharon bus and a cement truck near Obajana Market. In that incident, Oyedeji explained that the cement truck lost its brakes and collided with a parked Sharon bus whose passengers were making purchases at the market.
Addressing the recurring safety concerns, Oyedeji emphasized the need for enhanced driver caution, particularly for heavy-duty vehicle operators. He called for increased government intervention in improving road infrastructure and strengthening traffic regulation enforcement.
“As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, Nigerians are once again reminded of the shared responsibility to ensure safer roads for all,” Oyedeji stated.
The FRSC continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this latest tragedy while emergency services work to assist the injured victims.
