The Igbo Apprenticeship System Is The Central Focus of Forthcoming Film “Áfàméfùnà – An Nwa Boi Story”

From the stable of Come On Naija, Nollywood film Áfàméfùnà – An Nwa Boi Story will debut in Nigerian cinemas ahead of Christmas this year. The anticipated film, rooted in the Igbo apprenticeship system,  explores cultural heritage, love, sacrifice, ambition, betrayal and redemption, all of which are associated with the unique institution.

Afamefuna: An Nwa Boi Story follows the adventure of young Igbo boys who commit to apprenticeship in order to gain financial independence. As much as the film chronicles their aspirations and sacrifices, it also exposes the betrayals that come with success. 

The film is directed by Kayode Kasum, who has previously worked on projects such as Sugar Rush (2019), This Lady Called Life (2020) Far From Home (2022), Kambili – The Whole 30 yards (2020), Castle and Castle S2 (2019), Soole (2021), and Nollywood Musical Obara’M (2022). An award-winning  filmmaker, director and music video director, Kayode Kasum is known for his unique style and cinematography which has seen him direct Nigeria’s first live-action animated movie Dognapped (2017) and one of Nollywood’s all-time  highest-grossing films, Fate of Alakada (2020). The graduate of YabaTech, who received a nomination in prize for Filmmaking at the  2019 The Future Awards Africa and was identified as one of the sought-after Nollywood directors in 2020. He is the director of the currently  running show Something Like Gold (2023) that is celebrated as Nigeria’s first longest running Showmax original series. 

Set to be released on the 1st of December 2023, Áfàméfùnà – An Nwa Boi Story is set to provode a scintillating visual and cinematic experience as the year wraps up.
