Honorary degrees tend to serve as a way through which universities can honour a distinguished visitor’s contributions to a specific field or society in general. By doing this, it bestows an academic degree on the honoree by waiving its usual requirements and tends to be a doctorate or less commonly, a master’s degree.

As part of its congregation ceremonies at the Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals in July 2022, the University of Kent has announced a list of 10 honorary degree recipients. Afrobeats singer, Tiwa Savage who received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the university before eventually transitioning into the music industry will be made Doctor of Music in recognition of her inspirational and international career in music. She will be honored alongside 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature winner, Prof. Abdulrazak Gurnah and solicitor, Olufunke Abimbola MBE.
