VanJess Comes Full Circle On Sophomore EP ‘Homegrown’

On their sophomore EP, Homegrown, Igbo sisters, Ivana and Jessica of VanJess, come full circle. They build on their humble beginnings as standalone artists and the uncertainty the pandemic forced creatives to be in nine solid tracks that sensually and passionately touches on their solid RnB roots and their love for the glitz, glamour, and glitches that accompany relationships.

An eponymous title, Homegrown, which opens up with the earlier released Come Over is spun on the sister’s superpowers including production done in the comfort of their own home during the lockdown, deft lyricism of course, evident in the lushness of their narratives and persona-defining deliveries projected by way of synchronized articulation and naturalized harmonies. From start to finish, the project appraises their roots, relationships; as sisters, partners, and like minds and mental state.

Despite its murky origins and inspiration, Homegrown features the likes of Kaytranada who delivers delectable dysfunction on Dysfunctional and Phony Ppl whose synchronicity mirrors the sisters’ on Caught Up. Coupled with the pandemic, the project might have experienced major setbacks but its ties to VanJess’s originality gives it the authentic flavor it needs to flourish as your go-to mix of jazz, classic RnB, and great, sexy vibes.
