The news that Boko Haram has sworn their allegiance to Islamic State took the world by surprise yesterday. Shekau has given in and put Boko Haram under ISIS command.
With Boko Haram fearing defeat for the first time, it is turning to the violent and austere insurgent regime in Syria/Iraq. There are no evident doctrinal differences between the two groups. However, the strategic direction of Boko Haram could change as it becomes enmeshed with IS’s transnational terrorism.
