On his 2011 mixtape, Burn Notice, Burna Boy paid homage to one of his idols, Angelique Kidjo by sampling her for Wombolombo. These days, he’s earned his rights as her collaborator. Nominated for this year’s Grammy awards in the Global Music Performance category, this thumping new feature born from deep mutual respect complements their distinctive vocals in a rich fusion of instrumentation.
The Burna Boy sound has once again cascaded across borders as he teams up with one of the hottest names in music, the renowned Beninoise superstar Angelique Kidjo as she releases the visuals to her hit tune ‘Do Yourself’ featuring the African giant, off her soon-to-be-released album, ‘Mother Nature’.
Directed by Meji Alabi and shot in London and New York, both artists can be found dancing to the song at an “outsider cafe” while musicians and singers in the background join along. The track is taken from Kidjo’s most recent album, Mother Nature, which was released last year. Kidjo earned three nominations at the 2022 Grammys: Best Global Music Album (for Mother Nature) and two Best Global Music Performance nods (for Do Yourself and the Yo-Yo Ma collaboration Blewu).
