Eight artists from South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana contested against one another for BET’s Best African Act award this year. Nigeria was represented by Wizkid, Davido, Mr Eazi and Tekno, Ghana by Stonebwoy and South Africa by Nasty C, AKA and surprise nominee, Babes Wodumo.
Favorites for the award which is based on 2016’s music were Wizkid who was coming off his first number one record in One Dance with Drake, Nasty C for his stellar album, Bad Hair and Mr Eazi after impressively rising in the ranks and becoming one of the global faces of Afrobeat music. Tekno who had arguably the biggest Afropop track of the year in question was also a shoe in however, it never looked likely that Davido, AKA or Babes Wodumo were going to be victorious.
Earlier in the week, what has since been confirmed as a technical glitch showed Nasty C as the winner of the award sending many into fits in what they believed to be a steal for the South African rapper. With this award, Wizkid bags his second BET after a 2012 win in the same category.
