3D animated short film The Satchel has won one of the highly coveted awards at the recent 2021 Cannes Independent International Film Festival (CIIFF) in France.
Directed and co-produced by Nissi Ogulu, the film took home ‘The Audience Choice’ for ‘International Best Animated Short Film.’
Receiving the film’s first international recognition, the director said: “We Won Guys!! “THE SATCHEL’’ for me, really means the genesis of an adaptation of Yoruba mythology. It’s telling a story of the world as we know it as planet earth, through our own eyes, at the same time using our own myths and our own culture to do so. This award further enforces the need to grow further in order to engage future projects already in the works. I can tell you that the journey to the realization of this goal has been both phenomenal and challenging so I’m very excited that my brainchild is making great waves’’.
The Satchel, which was released this year, is based on the Yoruba mythology of earth’s creation. This story takes viewers back to a time where revered Yoruba deities, Obatala and Oduduwa, (sons of Olodumare, the supreme being) fought for the power to create earth using an “all-powerful Satchel”.
Created by Taeps Animation Studios and Creele Animation Studios, the 3D Afro-Anime is written by Jimi Oremule and produced by Ogulu, Oremule, Adeoyin Okuboyejo, and Ayobami Bello with music by Nissi (NissiNation). The film is voiced by Ogulu as well as the other producers.
