Amnesty International set to open Nigerian office

Human rights advocacy organization Amnesty International has had a rocky relationship with recent Nigerian governments, particularly with former president Goodluck Jonathan’s regime over what it saw as its weakness in fighting Boko Haram.

However, this tension has not stopped the Buhari led administration from welcoming the human rights watch group to open an office in the country’s capital city Abuja. The government also intends to to investigate previous claims of human rights abuse more closely.

Amnesty’s Nigerian office will also focus on the issue of the Niger Delta and the oil pollution prevalent in the region.

It is believed that the process is being held up by the absence of a Nigerian Minister of Justice- something that should be remedied over the coming days.
