Lekan Babalola’s name will undoubtedly feature in the pantheon of Nigerian music greats. As an accomplished musician and percussionist, he boasts of two Grammy Awards. He won his first Grammy in 2006 for his work on Ali Farka Toure’s In the Heart of the Moon, after receiving credits on three songs. He won a second Grammy in 2009 for his work on Cassandra Wilson’s album, Loverly. His success can be viewed as reflective of a desire to champion Yoruba cultural traditions and is keeping the consequently contribute to its spread.
As he readies his forthcoming LAKAAYE album, he releases a single Your Highness alongside UK rapper, RTKAL. The record is the ultimate fusion effort taking its roots in his typical jazz style and adding a modern twist of Afrobeat.
