The atmosphere in Nigeria right now is quite grim. Day after day, it gets gloomier and demands the attention of the entire world. The past couple of days have been the toughest. They have also shed light on just how resilient Nigerians are. In a cover of Bob Marley’s 1980 hit, Redemption Song, Johnny Drille praises Nigerian Youth for their can-do and unbreakable spirits.
The video comes as an episode of his Johnny’s Music Mondays series on YouTube, which has in the past seen him cover timeless songs like 2Baba’s If Love Is A Crime, Daniel Beddingfield’s If You’re Not The One, and Lionel Richie’s Stuck On You, among others. This time, however, Johhny Drille mirrors the spirit that has possessed Nigerian youths. His mesmeric articulation of Bob Marley’s words “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear for atomic energy. ‘Cause none of them can stop the time. How long shall they kill our prophets? While we stand aside and look? Some say it’s just a part of it. We’ve got to fulfill the book” ring true.
