The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) 2016 held on Saturday night in Johannesburg, South Africa and below are some of the notable occurrences.
South Africa rap talent Cassper Nyovest picked up the award for Best Live Act at the show. He edged out the likes of Eddy Kenzo, Flavour, Mafikizolo and Stonebwoy.
Sauti Sol emerged as the Best Group beating Mi Casa, Navy Kenzo, R2bees and Toofan.
Yemi Alade won the award for Best Female act over her Nigerian counterpart Tiwa Savage, Ghana’s Mz Vee, Tanzania’s Vanessa Mdee and Josey of Ivory Coast. This makes her the first artist to win the award for Best Female twice (2015 and 2016).
Drake won the award for Best International Act beating Adele, Beyoncé, Future and Rihanna to it.
Tekno defeated Falz, Simi, Nasty C, YCee and others to Best Breakthrough Act award.
Star Boy Wizkid won the award for Best Male act over AKA, Black Coffee, Diamond Platnumz and Patoranking.
He also went home with the award for African Artist Of The Year beating Yemi Alade, Diamond Platnumz, Black Coffee and Sauti Sol.
Wizkid made it a ‘hat-trick’ after ‘Soweto baby’ by DJ Maphorisa won Best Collaboration.
Hugh Masekela, a South African human rights activist, musician and composer emerged with the MTV Legend award at MAMA 2016.
