Posted on

Did you know that there are approximately 4.66 billion active Internet users worldwide? Can you imagine all the different ways in which we all use the internet? Obasanjo’s Internet is our interview series where we speak to some of our Internet favourites on how they relate to the Internet and what it means to them and their work. This week, YouTuber and content creator, Amy Okoli, talks to us about how she uses Obasanjo’s Internet

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
When I wake up I pray then I try to read for like 30 minutes before standing up, but immediately after praying, I take my dog out to pee.

How do you use the internet for work or pleasure?

I use it for work and pleasure.

What moment or episode in your life would you say captured the essence of the internet?

When I started my YouTube channel. It was crazy. I didn’t know there was something like that so when I found out I went into a rabbit hole then I decided to do it.

Your favourite social media platform and why?

Right now I think it’s TikTok because so many things are on TikTok and it has become my source. I’m telling someone “I heard if you use this and this your hair will grow”. What’s my source? I saw it on Tiktok.

What was the last meme you saved?

I don’t save memes because I don’t like having screenshots on my phone.

Do you remember the first time something you posted went viral? What was it? How did it make you feel?

My YouTube video when I went on three dates in 24 hours in Lagos. I filmed it with my friends and a lot of people watched it. I knew it was going to do well because Nigerians like love and everything that has to do with a girl and a boy. I didn’t really feel any type of way.

What’s the most outrage you have ever generated over something you posted? How did you react to it?

I don’t have any. I don’t create outrage, and I hope not to. My content is very peaceful.

What rules do you live by on the internet?

Right now I am working on not talking too much. I mean I never used to talk to a lot but recently people are coming back to me and putting what I said on the Internet so I don’t want to talk too much again.

What is your guiltiest online pleasure?

Watching TikTok for like two hours. My TikTok screen time? I don’t even want to see it again.

Would you say you have an online persona?

I would say I am funnier in real life than I am on the Internet. I wouldn’t say it’s a persona because obviously, the Internet cannot get every single part of someone.

What’s your favourite emoji and why?

🤣 just to show that the laugh isn’t a normal one.

Are you particular about your feed?

No. But recently I decided to think about what I want to do moving forward. I want to be a little bit more meticulous with the planning.

YouTube or TikTok? Which do you prefer and why?

I would say YouTube because you can also watch TikTok on YouTube, but ultimately because of the long form content as well. I really love videos I can play in the background while I’m cleaning or doing something. I know YouTube has shorts now where people just repurpose their TikTok.

Which Nigerian creator do you think the world needs to see and hear more of?

My sister Ashley Okoli, but in due time the world will see and hear more of her.

Who is the coolest person you follow and the coolest person who follows you?

I’d say the coolest person I follow is Ashley Okoli and the coolest person who follows me is Don Jazzy.

What is your favourite Nigerian podcast?

I Said What I said. I listen to it all the time.

Have you ever hooked up with someone you met online?

No. I try to avoid meeting people online.

5 people you’d love to see answer these questions

Ashley Okoli, Korty, FK Abudu.
