The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped from their previous 40th to the 42nd position in the latest FIFA rankings. This shift,  according to the rankings, posted on FIFA’s official website indicates that the Eagles have lost 16.04 points, resulting in a new total of 1474.44 points, compared to the October score of 1490.48.

Despite this drop, the team’s standing within the continent remains unchanged, maintaining their 6th position. The Super Eagles are positioned just below Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt, respectively. The Atlas Lions of Morocco maintained their status as the highest-ranked African team, standing at 13th position in the world, garnering a total of 1661.69 points. Followed closely by the Teranga Lions of Senegal who currently occupy the  20th position with 1594.31 points and Tunisia at the 28th position, stands with 1523.23 points. Meanwhile, Algeria rounds up the top five teams in Africa, occupying the 30th position with a score of 1520.26 points.

This decline in ranking reflects the Super Eagles’ most recent performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, where they secured a 1-1 draw against Lesotho on Nov. 16 and Zimbabwe on Nov. 19.  The ranking assessment takes into account the World Cup qualifiers played across the world.

The calculations also considered other confederations’ schedules, including UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying matches, Concacaf Nations League 2023-24 encounters, and the Pacific Games 2023. These diverse matches significantly influenced the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, impacting the overall standings.

Looking ahead, with the updated rankings, the Super Eagles aim to deliver a stronger performance at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast scheduled for January 2024.
