How DJ Obi Broke A Guinness World Record and Built Obi’s House

Obinna Ajuonuma, commonly called DJ Obi, set a Guinness World Record in July 2016 for the longest-ever DJ set. He completed a 240-hour marathon on the decks at a Lagos cafe, smashing the previous record of 200 hours set in Dublin, in 2014, by the Polish DJ Norbert Selmaj. During his set, DJ Obi was allowed a five-minute break every hour, had to have someone dancing at all times, and could not repeat a song within four hours of playing it.

In the fourth episode of Overnight Success, an interview series hosted by The Culture Custodian, DJ Obi relays the backstory of his record with the publication’s editor-in-chief, Oluwamayowa Idowu. Obi also provides insights into his childhood, what it means to be the son of a popular media personality, his career as a deejay, and his Obi’s House party franchise, among other things.

Episodes of Overnight Success feature playful and insightful tête-à-têtes with some of the most important Nigerian creators and entrepreneurs, bringing attention to their origins and the tricks of their trade.
