While it may be a byproduct of the popularity of pop music, it is more than a breath of fresh air when local artists transcend this all-too-real stereotype and deliver substance. Newly prominent in the league of stereotype ‘trandscenders’ is 18-year-old PsychoYP. Earlier this year, he released This Is What You Wanted – a 10 track EP which is said to have witnessed moderate success in the Nigerian music scene. Off the EP is the song Who Dis produced by Jaylon and Higo, which leads to reminders of Davido’s Back Then but goes further by fusing trap and hip-hop beats and a lot more lyrical content with lines like:
“Blue ticks. Never got replies, now they switching ‘cos a young nigga fly, Issa new vibe, watch this, it’s a new phone, omo who dis?”
In the video, which was shot in the Capital we witness a significantly animated Psycho in a series of canted shots, with fast-paced transitions and seemingly significant and strategic color combination. It all really is a breath of fresh air.
