Nonso Chilaka, known professionally as Whytace, has built a reputation for creating unique, eye-catching fashion pieces. His impressive client roster includes Nigerian music stars like Rema, D’banj, Victony, Fireboy, and Seyi Vibez. Whytace’s distinctive styling approach seamlessly blends traditional African elements with modern aesthetics, resulting in pieces that are both culturally rich and contemporary. This innovative fusion has become his signature, allowing his creations to speak volumes in the fashion world.
“Property of Akwayard,” Whytace’s latest artistic endeavor, is a fusion that combines the Igbo word “akwa” (clothes) with “yard” (house), essentially translating to “house clothes.” This collection made its debut at the prestigious VVS Lagos Fashion Show in July 2024, garnering acclaim from both critics and attendees. The line uses bold colors and intricate patterns, paying homage to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of contemporary fashion. Each piece in the collection shows Whytace’s ability to bridge tradition and modernity in his designs.
To showcase “Property of Akwayard,” Whytace collaborated with popular Nigerian YouTuber Korty on a visually stunning lookbook video. This dynamic visual narrative captures the pulsating energy of Lagos Island, serving as a moving canvas that brings the collection’s themes to life.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the collection, he says, “I wanted to create something that resonates with the cosmopolitan spirit of Lagos Island, a place where tradition and modernity coexist. Each piece in this collection tells a story—a celebration of where we come from and where we are headed.”
