S16 Film Festival (S16FF) Unveils 9-12 December 2022 Programming Lineup

The S16 Film festival (S16FF) returns for its second edition, celebrating cinema as an art form and spotlighting the new wave of filmmakers at the forefront of the development and extension of cinematic language in Africa and beyond. The 2022 edition will be held from 9 – 12 December at the historic “Old Federal Government Printing Press” in Lagos Island, Nigeria.

S16FF offers an exciting lineup ranging from Classics of African cinema, special presentations of highly rated and anticipated projects, and exciting explorations of the surrealist themes that underpin the festival. It is screening 14 films, comprising 10 short films and 4 feature-length films, by directors from diverse  countries such as Nigeria, Ghana , South Africa and Rwanda. The opening night kicks off on 9 December with an exhibition dedicated to the legendary filmmaker – Tunde Kehelani, showing memorabilia and items which were integral to the development of his films over the years. This selection is in accordance with one of the film festival’s central tenets, which is celebrating technical excellence in the cinematic arts and the importance of knowledge and respect for cultural pioneers and practitioners who have pushed the arts forward.

On 10 December, the Opening Feature film will be the acclaimed “Saworoide” (1999) by Tunde Kehlani. Kehlani will also give a special introduction to his film and participate in a Q&A after the retrospective screening.

Neptune Frost, the exhilarating and inventive Afrofuturist drama from Anisia Uzeyman and Musician Saul Williams is the feature film screening also slated for 10 December off the back of it’s debut at the Cannes Film Festival and subsequent screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival. After which screenings of Ethereality, Gbese, Crocodile Smile, Carmilla and The Broken Mask, which are some of the exciting short films
screening at the festival this year.

On December 11 there will be a special presentation of Ema Edosio’s powerful Otiti feature film following which there will be screenings of Seeking Aline, A Japa Tale, Ixora, Spirit and Jua Kai.
The Festival will close out with the seminal and award winning “This is not a burial it’s a resurrection” by Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese
