The Ebola outbreak tearing through the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading faster than the response can keep up with, and has become the country’s deadliest ever recorded, and the second-largest in history since 2016. More than 2,000 people have died, and over 4,300 cases have been confirmed across five provinces since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. Only the West Africa epidemic of 2014–2016, which killed more than 11,000 people, has claimed more lives.
